The National Football League finds itself in the awkward position of being the enemy of both Donald Trump and the Left, albeit for very different reasons.
Donald Trump vs. the NFL
One of Donald Trump’s most famous failures was his effort to become an NFL team owner. He decided to do this by first purchasing a team in the newly-formed spring football league the USFL, then either (a) work out some kind of merger deal with the NFL, OR (if plan A failed) (b) sue the NFL, claiming that it was an illegal monopoly.
The NFL did not allow him a seat at their table, so he opted for plan B and sued. Trump won the lawsuit, but the jury only awarded him $1.00 in damages (a check he never cashed). That was three decades ago. Trump is a grudge-holder, which is not a particularly admirable trait, but if he were imbued with admirable traits his business plans would not include lawsuits and bankruptcies.
The NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem gave Trump the ammo he needed to go to war with the NFL. Trump knows that the NFL depends on the support of the kinds of people that voted for him. He now gets to play the champion of American exceptionalism while settling a three-decade-old score against the NFL.
The Left vs. the NFL
The Left does not like the NFL. They look at professional football as a millionaire’s club of sex offenders and wife/girlfriend abusers—you know, criminals. You’d have to be deranged to watch those kinds of people get millions of dollars to play a violent game!
Like Donald Trump, the Left knows that the NFL cannot survive without the people who take their patriotism seriously. The folks who drink beer, eat meat, nachos, and garlic fries all while being covered in face paint, are as a rule going to hate your guts if you disrespect the American flag, the national anthem, or equivocate at all when discussing America’s unequaled greatness. I’m not saying there aren’t some serious football fans who feel the Bern, but they are not your average NFL fan.
The Left-wing media are attempting a trick play with their coverage. They are casting the kneeling players in a very positive light. Heck, they have all but canonized Colin Kaepernick for his alleged martyrdom! By idolizing the protesting players, the Left is fanning the flames of fan outrage in the hopes that they will stay at home and keep their pocketbooks shut. No $20 beers, no $40.00 hats, or $150 jerseys. The Left wants to ruin the NFL, and the best way to do that is turn off right-wing fans.
Trump is a willing participant in the Left’s plan, not because he’s actually upset about the kneeling and locking arms, but because he’s a petty grudge-holder. The Left is figuring out Trump’s playbook, and is exploiting one of his many weaknesses. Trump might have seen it coming if he weren’t so busy dissing other men’s wives or tweeting about TV ratings.
